Alabama-based sales team member Johnnie Burke sits down with Morbern for some insight into his life, passions and business.
How long have you been with Morbern?
I began my career with Morbern in April of 2014 and have spent almost 10 years as a representative in the Southwest territory.
Why work for Morbern?
Morbern is the best. I competed against Morbern for many years in previous jobs and always found them to be a tough competitor across products and services. I jumped at the chance to join Morbern and I’m proud to be part of this team.
Of the markets you serve, do you have a favorite?
I began my career in the automotive and marine aftermarket, which is still my favorite market. I love cars and boats and enjoy the restoration business. Over 38 years, the distributors I collaborate with have evolved from customers to lifelong friends.
How are Morbern’s vinyls superior to other products in the marketplace?
Morbern’s Allante is a vinyl that every other manufacturer in the industry has tried but failed to emulate. Allante is the first of many products that set Morbern apart from its competition. The company stays ahead with innovation and technology that allows products to be engineered for specific markets and meet the needs of the customer base.
Do you have a favorite Morbern product?
Being a salesman, I like and get excited by what sells, and for me, the Allante Collection is a definite stand-out. The collection offers a strong color line and three different textures and looks that customers find appealing. Carrara is also one of my favorite products and has been the most widely accepted new product offered in my career.
Where do you call home?
I am proud to be from Alabama and have lived here most of my life. For work purposes, I have maintained an apartment in the Dallas-Fort Worth area for the last several years because it makes traveling the Southwest a lot more convenient. My career has led me to Georgia, Louisiana and Texas, but I’ve always found my way back to Alabama.
What can we find you doing when you’re not at work?
When I am not working, you will usually find me enjoying time with family, especially my two grandkids. My grandson is a really good athlete, so we are always going to some kind of sporting event he is involved with. My six-year-old granddaughter is taking tennis lessons and has also taken gymnastics and dance. When taking time for myself, I am an avid golfer, an upland bird hunter and I love to fly fish. My wife, Jeri, and I try and get to the beach at least once each summer because it is the only place I can truly put everything behind me and relax.
What’s the best business advice you’ve ever received?
When a former boss asked me what I thought it takes to be successful in sales, I told him it takes desire, product knowledge, organization and persistence. He reminded me that sincerity should always be a priority because customers will see right through you if you aren’t sincere. This advice is something I have never forgotten and that gentleman is still a good friend today.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
I really do not think I would surprise anyone. I have always been very true to myself and an open book to everyone. I’m also outspoken about my beliefs and ideas and I put everything I have into each day.
Who has been your greatest mentor?
My Dad was one of the greatest men I have ever known. He gave me and my brothers more love, guidance, nurturing and support than anyone could ever hope for. He was always there for us and led by example. He was a great salesperson and worked with a passion that I have rarely seen anywhere else.
What would you put on a billboard?
Mistakes do not have to happen! My wife reminds me of this all the time.
What are you currently reading?
My current business reads are “Talk Like Ted” by Carmine Gallo and “The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs” by Carmine Gallo. For personal enjoyment, I’m reading “The President and the Freedom Fighter” by Brian Kilmeade.
If you wrote a book about your life, what would it be titled?
“Anything Can Be Accomplished through GOD and Persistence”
What habits have you purposefully developed that have served you well?
My dad was a Marine drill sergeant and he instilled in me that the first task of the day is to make your bed. I didn’t always do it but I do realize that I should start the day with an accomplishment. Later I read the book “Make Your Bed” by a Navy Seal named Admiral William McRaven, which reinforces the fact that you should start your day with the toughest task because it makes the day much better.
What do you consider your greatest business accomplishment?
I fall short of things all the time, but it is not from a lack of effort and or strong work ethic. I had the privilege of working with both of my sons for a period of time and I am proud to say that they both have an incredibly strong work ethic which I hope they learned from watching and working with me. They have both gone on to chase their passions and have succeeded greatly.
