Flame retardants are chemical additives designed to minimize the spread of flames on fabrics and other surfaces to which they’re applied. Morbern’s Flame Retardant Free (FR free) vinyls are our answer to years of feedback from architects, designers and manufacturers, and regulatory changes that prohibit flame retardants on some products. Morbern’s Research and Development team developed products which remove flame retardants, but still have the appearance, durability and other qualities the market demands. For example, all Morbern products that are FRee pass Cal 117.
California passed Assembly Bill 2998, which went into effect January 1, 2020 and is now the most stringent law in the United States concerning residential flame retardant exposure. AB 2998 is the result of extensive research and guidance from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission that concluded fire retardants aren’t needed to provide fire safety and prevent significant health risks to children and first responders. AB 2998 addresses a range of consumer products and prohibits upholstered furniture and reupholstered furniture that contain fire retardant chemicals at levels exceeding 1,000 parts per million.
